a weekend with Him
"The darkness hides the true size of fears and lies and regrets," Jesus explained. "The truth is they are more shadow than reality, so they seem bigger in the dark. When the light shines into the places where they live inside you, you start to see them for what they are."
"But why do we keep all that crap inside?" Mack asked.
"Because we believe it's safer there. And, sometimes, when you're a kid trying to survive, it really is safer there. Then you grow up on the outside, but on the inside you're still that kid in the dark cave surrounded by those monsters, and out of habit you keep adding to your collection. We all collect things we value, you know?"
-The Shack, Chapter 12, In the Belly of the Beasts
As I read those words the tears immediately began to flood and would not cease. I had to set the book down and let myself have a good cry because I had just read what perfectly describes the emotions and pain that I am struggling with in my life right now... and for almost forever.
I have been seeking counsel regularly for the past 6 months or so and in my most recent session a couple of weeks ago I described to my counsellor how I can't seem to let myself let go of all of the feelings and emotions that I have carried around with me for the past couple of decades. I told him that it felt like I had been carrying this backpack around for all this time, full of the weight of my fears, my anger, my bitterness, my pain. The weight just seems normal and comfortable to me. How can I set that backpack down and move forward with my life without the constant companionship of those dark friends? Who will I be without them? I am too afraid to leave them behind...
He challenged me to let them go. And to try and find a way to content with who I am in Christ without the influence of anything and everyone around me. He placed a heavy rock inside my purse and challenged me to keep it there until I am ready to let go of the backpack, ready to let Christ abide in me fully, to let the Spirit give me the peace to be who I am in plenty and in want.
It's easier said than done.
And then a few days later Kacie urged me to read The Shack. I've had it in my possession for a few weeks already because my mom bought it for me at a newsstand in the JFK airport, but I had been avoiding reading it. I don't know why really, except maybe because it's a faith based book.
When I think of faith based media (books, movies, music) I sometimes cringe because growing up they were never quite up to my standard of what good literature, film and music can be. This sounds very pompous and stuck up, but if you grew up around the time I did and you grew up in a Christian environment, you would probably say the same. Although, Christian musicians have come a long way since the 80's and 90's, there are even a couple of bands/artists that I kind of really enjoy. I can even admit that I've read about 3 or 4 faith based fiction novels and absolutely loved them, but out of all the books I've read, that is a small percentage. Film, on the other hand, seems to be a lot slower to catch up. To this day, The Passion of the Christ is the only faith based film I have ever watched and not rolled my eyes at. To be fair, because I've had this point of view for so long I have avoided watching, reading or listening to anything faith based, as a result there might be a whole slew of fantastic films, musicians and books produced by people of faith that I am not taking into account.
But I digress...
I definitely did not read the book because of all of the controversy surrounded around it. I actually have no clue what anyone has negatively said about the book other than they believe it is Scripturally unstable/unsound, that the book is flat out heresy or that the author is Satan incarnate... I have to laugh at that last one because I strongly disagree.
First of all, it is a work of fiction and therefore cannot and should not be considered 100% Biblical. Second, in no way did I ever feel that my faith were being jeopardized or completely altered by reading this story. What I will say is that it changed my heart. It's as if before I read the book, when it came to my understanding and my vision of God I saw only black and white, but suddenly the Spirit touched my sight to reveal a multitude of colors with which I can better understand the nature of God, Christ and the Holy Spirit. There are questions I have asked my whole life, and questions I have been battling for the last year that were answered as I read this book.
It wasn't until the last half of The Shack that I really began to break down inside. I wasn't too fond of the first few chapters because I felt that the author didn't need to go into as much detail in explaining things that did not need as much explanation or attention, but not long into the book that changed and I found myself really wanting to read more.
By the 11th chapter, the book stopped speaking only to my logic and spoke straight to my heart. Pain I've harbored and repressed for years was bubbling up to the surface. All of the walls I built up around my heart began to crumble and it was as if the Lord has been peeling back the layers of my heart like an onion making me vulnerable to every emotional element. I feel exposed and raw and fragile... and I could not stop weeping.
With every barrier that is being broken down and with every memory that is resurfacing I am feeling slightly closer to uncovering why I am who I am and how to make myself content. With this sadness comes the unexpected tinge of hope I never had felt before when faced with such depth of sorrow. A shattered heart needs sutures rather than gauze to heal and though each suture is like another stabbing of a partially healed wound, at least the bleeding will stop seeping through the cracks, eventually.
Since this journey is far from over, I have no ending to offer. The only bit of hope I can give you is the hope that He gave me through David, who read to me this Psalm when I felt lost and alone this weekend.
Psalm 34
1 I will extol the LORD at all times;
his praise will always be on my lips.
2 I will glory in the LORD;
let the afflicted hear and rejoice.
3 Glorify the LORD with me;
let us exalt his name together.
4 I sought the LORD, and he answered me;
he delivered me from all my fears.
5 Those who look to him are radiant;
their faces are never covered with shame.
6 This poor man called, and the LORD heard him;
he saved him out of all his troubles.
7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him,
and he delivers them.
8 Taste and see that the LORD is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
9 Fear the LORD, you his holy people,
for those who fear him lack nothing.
10 The lions may grow weak and hungry,
but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.
11 Come, my children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
12 Whoever of you loves life
and desires to see many good days,
13 keep your tongue from evil
and your lips from telling lies.
14 Turn from evil and do good;
seek peace and pursue it.
15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous,
and his ears are attentive to their cry;
16 but the face of the LORD is against those who do evil,
to blot out their name from the earth.
17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them;
he delivers them from all their troubles.
18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
19 The righteous person may have many troubles,
but the LORD delivers him from them all;
20 he protects all his bones,
not one of them will be broken.
21 Evil will slay the wicked;
the foes of the righteous will be condemned.
22 The LORD will rescue his servants;
no one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

this week and why i still feel like a giant pile of grossness
To my faithful readers it may seem I've abandoned my blog...
and I sorta have lately. I'm sorry!
But I have a good excuse: Since last Friday I have had Strep Throat and laying, sleeping, resting on the couch or in bed watching TV, movies or reading has just been so much easier to do than sit upstairs in my uncomfortable chair and blog. I also don't think I will be able to catch up on my blog reads or comment much and I'm sorry you guys :(
Here's what happened: Last Thursday evening Dave and I went over to The Hadley's house for some pizza and Back to the Future. I had a lot of jalapenos and red pepper flakes on my pizza which made my lips and mouth burn (I know this may not make sense to the story now, but waaaaaitfoooooriiiiiit). After the movie was over my throat started to burn a little. I thought it could have been from the fiery hotness of the pizza, or maybe since I was cleaning up a storm earlier that day and was using new cleaning products that made me sneeze, that my throat possibly suffered because of it.
Anyway, we went home, went to bed and right at 2am, BAM, I was awake with a throat so hot on fire I could barely swallow and I definitely couldn't fall back asleep. So I got out of bed, grabbed a cough drop and tried to go back to sleep. NO DICE. I laid there with a stomach ache from the cough drop and a throat that still blazed on. So I went downstairs, made a cup of peppermint tea to settle my stomach, watched an infomercial and as soon as my tummy settled a bit, I made a cup of honey lemon Theraflu, caught up on The Judds, and fell back asleep around 4am. Around 6am Dave woke me up and helped me back upstairs to bed. I woke up around 8am feeling like I hadn't slept in daaaaaaaaaayz. My entire body ached. Even my bones ached. MY TEETH ACHED.
I hung around the house a bit and then decided to the urgent care I needed to go. I had plans that day (Friday) to see Water for Elephants with Lauren and Kacie and since I've waited a year to see it, I knew no matter what the doctor said, I needed to go or I'd be super bummed.
Turns out I had a fever, a migraine and Strep Throat. A shot in the hip, prescription for antibiotics and a promise to take 800 milligram of ibuprofen later, I felt slightly better so I decided off to WforE I go...
Bad idea. I was DOWN FOR THE COUNT by the last third of the movie. Though I'm glad I saw it since I had been waiting for so long (even though Reese Witherspoon's performance was a MAJOR LETDOWN...girl, you are better than that), I just shouldn't have gone. I drove home to Dave and literally fell on the couch. I eventually forced myself upstairs to get in my sweats and laid on the couch for the remainder of the day. That night I slept for 12 hours.
Easter was a bust for me. I couldn't go to church (and I was really looking forward to sunrise service), and I just rested until it was time to get ready to go to Dave's grandparents' house to take the family photos. Getting ready alone, WORE ME OUT. I was ready for bed before we even stepped foot out of the door. Lunch gave me the strength I needed to take the photos, but after that I was beat. My mom had to help me to the car. Needless to say, the next day I paid for it. I stayed on the couch all day. I finished reading The Hunger Games series, watched some TV, caught up on some American Idol (THANK GOD Stefano is FINALLY gone), and just rested up for yesterday: our Disneyland double date with the Friedman's we'd been planning for weeks.
I had hoped that by yesterday I felt much better for our day at Disneyland and thankfully I did, but today I'm paying for it. Last night I slept at least 10 hours and I'm pretty exhausted. I don't regret it though because we had such an incredibly awesome time. First of all the Friedman's (Anthony and Chanell) are super rad, and experiencing Dland the way they do was refreshing and super fun. Chanell and I drove out there early and met up with the guys later after they both got off work. Round two is already in the works. I can't wait.
So all in all that's pretty much been my week. I'm hoping that I start to feel 100% better soon, especially since my antibiotics are gone, and especially since I feel like a giant pile of lazy crap and I really don't need an excuse to sit around the house and do nothing all day long.
Anyway, here are a few shots I snapped with my phone at Disneyland yesterday.

Ladies' Night, The Hiding Place, and Hunger Games
I'm just gonna start off by saying I am exhaaaaaaaaaaaaaausted. I am so freaking tired. If I laid down on the couch, or heck even the floor, right now, I'd fall asleep.
But I cannot sleep. I had a pretty full day already (and that's not even why I'm tired) and I still have to pack because tomorrow David and I are flying to New York for a few days (For business. His and my mom's, not mine. I just get to enjoy the city).
I know, I know I'm a pretty lucky lady. Traveling is one of my dear loves and true pleasures in life. I never get tired of it, even if it's to a place I've already been before.
I could have packed yesterday, but I did a lot of random things before going out to ladies' night at Lauren's house with one of her neighbors and Kacie. It was a fun night, but I accidentally had too many cocktails and even though I was definitely sober by the time I left, I woke up feeling like crap. I mean, I only had three and had three slices of homemade pizza, but since I don't drink all that often, when I do it really effects me the next day.

And today I went to the second audition of the The Hiding Place, the play I am assistant directing in June. I haven't mentioned it on the blog until now because I guess I just thought I should wait until everyone was cast and I knew where we stood and what our roles on and off stage would look like. I am also cast to play two different characters. The play has a HUGE cast that we've trimmed down to about 35 characters with 23 actors, many of them taking on multiple roles and learning different dialects. I'm really excited about it, especially now that we have our actors and things seem to be coming together more smoothly. It will be something that I'll be really immersed in for about two months so I'm sure I'll probably be blogging about it a lot (or not blogging at all, HA HA!). We'll see. This is the first show I've been involved with in over two years, maybe even three, and I'm really looking forward to jumping right back into it. I've missed the theatre so much and I know that when rehearsals start I will really realize that I missed it more than I thought I had.

I also stopped by Target on my way home to pick up the second of the Hunger Games trilogy. I started reading it the other night and I had planned to read it on the plane to and from New York, but I'm almost finished with it! I was able to have a few hours on Thursday to do nothing so I just read it and kinda plowed through it, so if I don't finish it tonight due to packing or sleep or whatever, I'll finish it on the flight and start the second book as well. I can't wait!!
I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead of you. I'll catch up on it all when we get back from Manhattan <3
